One of my maxims is how forgetful we
are as people. It's why I like the
Passover Seder meal. Reviewing the story
of God's deliverance with specific foods helps the story to stick in my mind. Making memories of this type is crucial to
one as forgetful as I am. God knew this
about us since He told the Israelites to celebrate Passover every year before
they ever began grumbling in the desert.
He knew they would forget that spectacular deliverance from slavery in
Egypt and wish to go back. If the ones who walked through the Wondrous Wall
of Water forgot the power and love of God, it's not really a surprise that I am
forgetful too.
We also celebrate holidays
like Christmas and Easter. We do unique
things on these occasions to help us remember.
Sadly, the secular can distract us from our purpose. The pretty lights and pretty dresses can
become the focal point instead of the truths they represent. We don't want to be accused of being too religious,
and can end up just going through the motions without talking as much as we
should about the reasons behind them. This
could leave only traditions while the true gems and joys are hidden.
We need to remember the
reasons and pull out the gems and hold them in our hands and reflect on their
beauty. Yes, you may say it every
single year and it's always the same (or not), but keep telling the stories. It will be impressed in your mind and in the
minds of your family. This is a legacy
to pass down to future generations.
We need to keep
telling the stories of Jesus...over and over...to anyone and everyone... living
in wonder at the power and love of God.
