God is Sovereign

Yes, this is most assuredly true.  This means that God is not controlled or confined by anything that we do or anything that “nature” does or anything at all.  God is above and over all of it.  It says in The Book that not even a sparrow falls that he is not aware of.  So he knows about all the details of our lives – even the minutia.

I wrote in my quote book this little saying years ago.

Fear of God
knowing that He is over everything
Rest in God
trusting that He is over everything

This is the difference between knowing God or not.  God is sovereign and that’s pretty scary if you don’t know Him.  And even if you do.  To know that you have no actual control – that God is bigger than any power that you know and is able to protect you from harm or not.  That he can make or crush your dreams.  That He knows all your sins, public and private.  That he can stop storms but doesn’t sometimes.  That he is reigning over the spiritual and the physical aspects of life.  If you don’t know who He is – this is scary.

There is no person who ever lived that I would want to have such control.  Because no one is pure.  The power and influence of everyone in the world and how some use that power is scary enough.  But the difference is in actually knowing the One who has this control.  It’s knowing the other things about Him in conjunction with his sovereignty.  God is love.  God is just.  God is righteous.  God is holy.  And He never stops being one to be the other.  However he acts in completely in line with his character.

By his mercy, I have come to know him just a bit, and I put my whole life in His hands.  I knew my sin, confessed my sin and gave Him lead over my life.  He lavished his love on me by allowing his own perfect son to die to pay for the sins I commit.  He does not see my sin any longer; it has been covered and paid for by the death of Jesus.  And since Jesus conquered death, then I can live victoriously over and despite sin.  This is where love and righteousness meet and kiss.  And this is how I can know rest.

Because knowing that an all powerful God loves like this is an amazing comfort and a strong foundation.  It is because I know His character that I can trust His power.  It is because of the seeming oxymoron of the cross of death which brings abundant life that can help me see that bad situations aren’t always completely bad.  Loss of anything can bring about life that couldn’t have come any other way.  And so I can look to Him and trust.  Trust the Lover of my soul and be thankful that he is indeed sovereign.  Trust the Sovereign to work the plan as He sees fit, and follow as best I can, failings and all, knowing that he will use even these for his glory.
