I just finished reading the gospels. Imagine if this was real life and people were
telling you what they had experienced. (It was real life, by the way!)
"Yeah, we were there all day and figured the people were hungry and then
Jesus said we should feed them! We
didn't have enough food - several loaves of bread and a few fish... for 5000+
people. Yet, we picked up baskets
full of leftovers." Jesus kept
doing unconventional things like healing when He wasn't supposed to, and
talking to people He shouldn't associate with.
He rarely answered questions straight up, but rather with another
question or with a story.
Can you
imagine the dinner time conversations in the homes of those who had seen some
of these miracles? Was He the Messiah or
was He crazy? Are we being led into truth
or heresy? The leaders speak against Him
and are trying to kill Him. Who is the
common man supposed to follow? This
Jesus speaks with authority and He extends love to everyone, but our leaders
say He's of the devil. I suppose,
sometimes, He doesn't speak so lovingly to them, but is saying what I've been
thinking about them anyway.
Jesus keeps surprising us all. He eats with sinners and touches lepers. He gives worth to their existence. Then He calls the elite by rude names like
"white-washed tombs". He lets
the adulterous off without punishment. He lets people mourn for a few days before
going to raise His friend from the dead.
He chastises His disciples for lack of faith.
He lets them kill Him. He ignores the lies and endures more than I
can even fathom. I wonder how often He
would weep for the lack of faith and for the way people represented and treated
His Father... and also for the people's rejection of the love that He had to
offer.
He was killed, but He overcame even death. It seems almost too good to be true. He told them what would happen and it
happened just as He said.
I need to
think more often about the life of Jesus.
I need to wonder about His daily life and how He interacted with those
around Him. He walked grace and
truth. Sometimes He might seem a little
too harsh or a little too lax. It was
right though; He acted rightly. We need
to evaluate our own actions in light of this.
We need to know Him so we can also reflect well His love and
justice. We need to continue to wonder
about His life and live in awe of His love and mercy.
